Dear parents, staff, students and visitors
Welcome to Fernside School Community.
As the school Board of Trustees we would like to welcome you all back to another wonderful year at Fernside School and we would like to extend a very special welcome to the many new families to the school.
First we would like to introduce ourselves. The photograph was taken at a recent BOT meeting. Al Fone a strategic planning facilitator was in attendance to take the photo. It is all smiles at the start of the year.
Prize Giving End of Year BoT Speech
Greg Ward, Board of Trustee Chairperson
Thursday 15 December 2016
It is my privilege as a Chairperson of the BoT to give a quick review on behalf of all board members on what has been a busy and another positive year for the School.
The Board has seen some changes around the table this past year after the elections in June.
New to the board are Geoff Gale, Alan Cuthbertson – welcome gentlemen and thanks for your enthusiasm and energy thus far. Thanks to Reuben, Paula, Nicki and David for your ongoing commitment and contributions.
Megan Penny finished a co-opted role on board in May. It is important we acknowledge this and the considerable commitment Megan has made over the years. It started as a parent in 2001. Parent help & transport for several years on various excursions/trips/camps. Basketball Coach/Ref/Assistant. PTA including President. Participation in “The Gardens of Fernside”, Triathlon, Easter Raffles, Sausage sizzles, Disco’s, Quiz Nights etc. Thanks you Megan and family.
To the PTA, led by Angela Darragh at the start of the year and now Natasha Pagan and their committees, thank you for all your work throughout the year. An amazing year of fundraising which is a tribute to our parent community who have made this happen.
As I mentioned in my speech last year you set yourself some large goals this year. And you certainly delivered on these.
Earlier this year Fernside School hosted Nigel Latta – not only a sell-out but a great community event. Special thanks to Angela Darragh and Keren Stalker and team.
We have just had our most successful Gardens of Fernside. An amazing event that show cases our School. The day is a lot of planning and a tribute to the team led by Sarah Davidson and school families who helped on the day. We are very lucky to have such committed families in times of high pressure on us all. We are very grateful to the wider community for embracing this event.
Our School, being a decile 10 school, receives the minimum funding levels from the ministry. This means that additional funding through community activity, led by the likes of the PTA, is a very important part of allowing the School to prosper, develop and invest in areas that we hope will further benefit our children's education, personal development and create positive life experiences for them.
Volunteerism is an integral cog in our school wheel. The likes of the PTA team, the Board, parent classroom helpers and other groups of parents offer their time to do what they can to assist making Fernside School the best it can be. Regardless of your background there will be ways that you can assist the school throughout the year and we would encourage you all to help in any way you can.
We would also like to thank David Taylor and his very capable teaching staff and support team. The School is very well managed. It is an eye opener from our privileged viewpoint as board members seeing the significant work load, skill set and duties David and his team have to manage the school. Skills and responsibilities well beyond the pure teaching aspects one might think they only need. And it is fair to say that the development of new skills by the school staff will need to continue given the nature of teaching and demands of school operations under the ever-changing landscape that is education focused on collaborative learning.
It would be remiss not to mention the wonderful support offered to ALL by Sandi, (the School mum) her office support Rebecca, as well as the tremendous work that Barry and Wendy do for the school. Thanks guys.
Whilst it is difficult to single out individuals or parents as we are so lucky to have such wonderful support from many, it is appropriate to acknowledge the Hurley family. Dean and Victoria.
Dean (and Victoria’s) commitment to the School is nothing short of exceptional. Dean a board member since 2010 and in the Chair since 2011, he has made a significant contribution to the School not only in this capacity but as a dedicated and committed parent. Like the Penny family, the parent role started for the Hurley’s in 2001.
Victoria has been Parent helper, PTA President, Chairperson Jubilee Committee, Teacher and PTA Staff rep. Olivia their daughter is now training to be a teacher. Thank you both for your wonderful contribution to Fernside School.
Lastly to the year 8's. Once again we see a group of outstanding young citizens ready to take on the next challenge in their lives. Be proud of where you have come from and strive to be the best you can be during your next adventures at high school. We wish you all the very best with your future.
Merry Christmas to all.
