FERNSIDE MUSIC PROGRAMMES
Fernside School Music Programme
Fernside School offers a Music Programme with Music Specialist, Jane Leopold.
From Year 2, every class has a ¾ hour lesson for most of the year.
The children’s lessons include elements of listening, appreciating, playing, creating, reading, singing and recording.
The children learn to play on glockenspiels when they are younger and grow to play on the marimba. We now have 8 marimbas in total and can have whole classes on, at one time.
The aim is to get children to play in time to the beat and play repeated melodic tunes when they are younger and then play with 3-part harmony when the children are older. Older students learn to play with different stick technique and play chords or bass sections. This is a great introduction to piano.
The children also learn to play the ukulele, starting with strumming techniques and basic chords and moving to more advanced chord playing and strumming technique. This is an introduction to string instruments.
The recorder covers our wind instruments, with basic notes and breathing covered until they move to more advanced note playing.
In older classes we combine all instruments to give orchestra and band effect. We attend the Strike Festival every second year, which allows us to perform with many other Christchurch Schools in the Westpac Arena.
With all lessons, we learn about reading music and apply this knowledge when writing songs and their own music.
Choir is offered to students from Year 2 – 8. We attend many festivals during the year.
The school offers group and individual itinerant Music lessons. These give the students a chance to excel at an instrument.
Music offers the chance to be exposed to a lot of different music and instruments, in the hope they will continue this passion for Music throughout their life.
