PE & Health (Including Outdoor Education) & Sport
Gearing students up for PE at Fernside School
The following gear will allow students to participate in physical activity in a comfortable, healthy and safe way:
*Shorts are to be above the knee and made of fabric that allows for full movement. We recommend the navy blue techno-dry shorts from The Warehouse. They are also the shorts required for School Sport, the Fernside Tennis Club and the Fernside School Basketball Club. (No singlet tops or 3/4 pants please).
*Sports shoes are necessary to support feet and protect them when on asphalt and in the plantation (Bare feet are sometimes adequate for some field activities).
The sports shirts come accented in the four house colours as in the picture on the right. On the back they are printed in jade with the name of the school.
At Fernside School there is a strong emphasis on PE & Health, & Sport. Both areas have been identified as areas of specialist resourcing and specialist teaching.
The Fernside School Board of Trustees employ a specialist teacher, Annabel Wilson, to teach PE and co-ordinate Sports coaching and administration for students in years 5 - 8. The students are well served by the programme, the resourcing and the specialist teaching. Equally as important are the other staff members and parents who assist with the coaching and managing of teams. Parents are a valued part of the Sports Programme with their coaching and umpiring, and organizational abilities and efforts.
In addition to PE & Health, Year 5 - 8 students participate in a variety of organised programmes that provide pathways and opportunities to representative sport – North Canterbury (NC or our NC Zone, Rakahuri) and Canterbury. The regular annual events are: swimming, triathlon, duathlon, winter & summer sports tournaments, cross-country, athletics, basketball, and mountain biking. External sports’ organisations are invited into the School or we travel to other environments and venues on a biannual basis. Some of the regular activities include: camping, high-ropes, surfing, sailing, golf, cricket, alpine skiing and skating, & football.
Our School has strong links to the Community and Community Recreational Groups. Our School Basketball, Rugby Touch and Twilight Football teams as well as Fernside Tennis, Fernside Netball, Karate, and Waimak Football Clubs use the Fernside Community Hall and grounds. Other groups include Zumba and Fernside Bowls.
