History of the song
We were looking to reflect the school through a Bi-cultural eye. We had previously used Te Aroha but felt we wanted something that reflected our unique school better.
Ka ponga is reflective of a growing fern, growing shoots, leaves and blooming into a full grown fern.
This is reflective of the child, with shoots of growth as they bloom their way from childhood into adulthood. The tune ws taken from Te Harakeke (the flax) and matched to the words of Te Kaponga (for fern.)
The Melody is sweet and reflective which is why it was chosen.
Te Kaponga - Fernside School Song
(Not a literal translation.)
Anei he rau kaponga e The fern shoot grows
Hei raranga rourou a For weaving our basket
Ko tau rou Your basket
Ko tau rou My basket
Ka ora te iwi e The people will live
Anei he rau kaponga e The fern leaf grows
Hei hanga/waka/ e For making a boat
Ko tau hoe With your paddle
Ko taku hoe And my paddle
Ka tere te waka e The waka will be swift
Anei he rau Ka ponga e The is a fern leaf
Hei whiri taura e Twisting a rope
Here atu Strands this way and
Here mai That way
Kia kotahi e We will be one
